It’s not exactly news, but getting your site found on the web is really important.  Sadly, for a lot of website owners, it tends to be quite difficult. We created this site to give you some hints, tips, tricks, articles, links, and share some videos to help your quest for more web exposure for your site.

You might be asking, how did this all come about and why is it so difficult, and even more so, why is it so complicated?!  Let’s see if we can break this down into reasonable pieces.  The web is not just search engines.  It’s much bigger.  OK, that may not help, but it if we look at the totality of the web, we see that it is made up directories, large data stores, and all the web pages that make up websites.  The search engines are the programs, mostly really big programs that help us find what we are looking for.  The reason search engines are so powerful to business owners, is that search engines control what people find on the web..

Search engines, like Google, Yahoo!, AOL, and Bing, are made up of three basic components:

  • Web Spiders or Bots: These are programs that go through the web pages gathering information. Spiders build lists that are used to create large databases for indexing.
  • Search Engine Index: These are the databases that store the information about the web pages that are returned from by the search engine spiders. A web page must be listed in a search engine index in order to have any ranking within the search engine.
  • Algorithms: These are the very complex procedures for calculations that make up the procedures for how the spiders go through the Internet and how web pages are actually cataloged and ranked within the search engine index. Each search engine develops its own algorithm set or they contract with other search engine companies to use their algorithms. Algorithms contain the rules that dictate how web pages and websites are ranked within a search engine.

In recent years, the Google search engine has dominated web searches, with over well over 50% of all searches coming through its search facilities. Current statistic show that Google averages about 65% of the search market and, at times, more than that amount. In April, 2014, Google reached 67.6% of United States market share for search engines which did tie its previous record set in January, 2014, (source comScore). Coming in a very distant second place was the Bing search engine with only 18.7% of the market share.

Because Google has created such a dominant presence, most website managers, and search engine optimization professionals, as well as all Internet marketers, play particular attention to how to improve the ranking of websites within the Google rankings. Google rankings (actually all search engine rankings) are referred to as “search engine result pages” or SERPs. These are also frequently called the “free rankings” or the “organic rankings” or listings. High rankings in the Google SERPs are considered the holy grail of search engine listings.

High search engine rankings are often difficult to achieve, so website managers and website owners often turn this task over to professional search engine optimization specialists, frequently called SEO consultants, or sometimes just SEOs, who will work to rank website as high as possible in the Google rankings. Most SEOs spend their time aiming at rankings within Google and largely ignore the other search engines, since a high ranking in Google has such a big return on investment, yielding more potential “clicks” and therefore more traffic. The end result is a higher return on investment. Additionally, a high ranking in Google, often results in high rankings in other search engines since their algorithms (rules) are frequently very similar to Google’s.
